Davos 2012: Bill Gates commits $750m to fight AIDS

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed a further $750m (£479m) to a global fund to combat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. "These are tough economic times, but that is no excuse for cutting aid to the world's poorest," said Microsoft founder Bill Gates at the World Economic Forum (WEF). The Global Fund is a 10-year-old public-private partnership. The fund says it saves 100,000 lives a month. The WEF's annual gathering is being held in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. More than 2,600 delegates - including world leaders, economists and business chiefs - are attending the conference. "By supporting the Global Fund, we can help to change the fortunes of the poorest countries in the world," said Mr Gates. "I can't think of more important work." The Gates Foundation has given $650m since the Global Fund was launched 10 years ago at Davos.

UK is heading back into recession as economy shrinks

BRITAIN is sliding back into recession after bleak figures today showed the economy SHRANK at the end of last year. The Office for National Statistics said national output or GDP fell by 0.2 per cent between October and December. If output falls again between January and March the country will officially be back in recession. ONS statisticians blamed a big fall in manufacturing production for the slump — as well as far lower gas and electricity output. Former chancellor Alistair Darling admitted the "paralysis" in Europe was affecting the UK. But he slated the Coalition for "talking down the economy" ever since they took power last year. He blasted: "It's a social and economic imperative the Chancellor does something about it in the Budget in March." George Osborne admitted the figures were "disappointing" but largely down to the chaos in the eurozone.

Greece, creditors edge closer to deal

Greece and its private creditors made progress on Thursday in talks on restructuring its debt, both sides said, and they will continue negotiating on Friday with the aim of sealing an agreement within a few days. Athens needs a deal quickly to avert a chaotic default when a major bond redemption comes due in March. Greece's creditors are demanding that the European Central Bank contribute to a deal to put the country's messy finances back on track. "The talks focused on legal and technical issues and progress was made. They will continue on Friday and probably on Saturday too," a senior Greek government official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "We aim to conclude the deal very soon." The Institute of International Finance, which leads talks on behalf of creditors, similarly cited progress and said work would continue Friday. Neither side disclosed any details.

World Bank boss: Emerging markets at risk

World Bank President Robert Zoellick has warned that the eurozone crisis could have a dire effect on emerging markets if it continues in 2012. Speaking to CNN's John Defterios at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Zoellick discussed the World Bank's assessment that the coming year could be as bad for emerging markets as 2008 if the eurozone crisis worsened. "If there's a more serious breakdown in the eurozone... then developing countries have to be prepared," he said. "They have to pre-fund some of their own bonds, they have to look at the trade side, they have to look at the banking side." He said that while developing countries had provided about two-thirds of growth globally over the past five years, "we're all in this boat together and so if Europe really stumbles and fails it's going to hurt everybody." The World Bank is trying to shield emerging markets by making $27 billion available over next two years, specifically in central and eastern Europe.
